In the late hours of September 23, 2015, a street fight in unincorporated Norcross, Georgia, escalated into a deadly shootout, claiming the life of 20-year-old Tré Edwards of Lilburn. The young African American man was among a large group of more than 20 individuals who had gathered on Reddington Lane. The confrontation turned violent around 10 p.m., leading to an eruption of gunfire.
Amid the chaos, Edwards was struck by a bullet as he sought cover behind a car. He was discovered lying in the roadway and was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The shootout resulted in three other individuals sustaining injuries, though they were reported to be in stable condition. The scene was extensive, with multiple homes and vehicles in the area damaged by the gunfire.
In the ensuing investigation, Gwinnett County homicide detectives worked to piece together the events of that fatal night. Their efforts led to the identification of a suspect, and in December of that year, 23-year-old David Talamantes of Lawrenceville was arrested in connection with the shooting. Talamantes was taken into custody in DeKalb County on unrelated charges before facing warrants for felony murder and aggravated assault for his alleged role in the death of Tré Edwards. Due to the large number of people involved, detectives continued to investigate the incident even after the arrest.
