On a Tuesday evening in Washington, D.C., a burst of gunfire shattered the routine of Georgia Avenue. It was January 3, 2023, just before 6 p.m., when at least two individuals emerged from a vehicle stuck in traffic and opened fire on a group of men gathered on the sidewalk. In the wake of the chaos, 33-year-old Benjie Byers, a male resident of Northwest D.C., lay dead at the scene.
The brazen shooting, which occurred in the 6200 block of Georgia Avenue, NW, also left two other men and
an 8-year-old child wounded. The child, believed to be an unintended victim of a stray bullet, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, as were the other two men. D.C. Police Chief Robert J. Contee III stated that it was clear the adult victims, including Byers, were the intended targets of the assailants. The motive for the targeted attack remains unknown to the public.
In the immediate aftermath, police had not publicly identified any suspects. The investigation into the death of Benjie Byers is ongoing, and the Metropolitan Police Department has appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of those responsible. A reward of up to $25,000 has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the homicide. To date, the case remains listed as an unsolved homicide.
