In the spring of 2023, a burst of gunfire shattered the evening calm at the intersection of 1st and Q Streets in Northwest Washington, D.C. When the chaos subsided on May 18th, a 28-year-old Black man named Malik Leek Lyons was left with critical injuries. He was rushed to a local hospital, beginning a harrowing fight for his life that would span several months.
Another man also sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound during the incident and sought treatment at a hospital.
For over four months, Lyons courageously battled the severe complications arising from the shooting. His struggle, however, came to a heart-wrenching end on Sunday, October 1, 2023, when he succumbed to his injuries. His death transformed the case into a homicide investigation, leaving his loved ones to mourn the loss of a man described as goofy, silly, a great dancer, and a hard worker.
The Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch is actively investigating the fatal shooting of Malik Lyons. To date, authorities have not publicly identified any suspects in connection with his death, and no arrests have been made. The case remains unsolved. In an effort to bring those responsible to justice, the police have offered a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons involved in this tragic loss of life. Investigators are urging anyone with knowledge of the shooting to come forward as they continue to seek answers for a community shaken by this act of violence.
