In the spring of 2023, a burst of gunfire shattered the evening calm at the intersection of 1st and Q Streets in Northwest Washington, D.C. When the chaos subsided on May 18th, a 28-year-old Black man named Malik Leek Lyons was left with critical injuries. He was rushed to a local hospital, beginning a harrowing fight for his life that would span several months. Another man also sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound during the incident and sought treatment at a hospital.
