In the early evening of Thursday, May 18, 2023, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace in the 300 block of Franklin Street NE in Washington, D.C. When the sounds of the shots faded, a man lay gravely wounded. Fifth District officers responded to a report of the shooting at approximately 6:47 p.m. and discovered an adult male suffering from gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services arrived at the scene, but it was too late.
The man, identified as 47-year-old Leonard Carter of Northwest, D.C., showed no signs of life and was pronounced dead at the location. His death was classified as a homicide, adding to the city's growing count for the year.
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch are actively investigating the fatal shooting. As of now, authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the case. The investigation remains ongoing, and the police have offered a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the death of Leonard Carter.
