John J. Smith, a 59-year-old resident of Washington, DC, tragically died on July 4, 1904. Smith, a veteran police officer with over 30 years of service, was on duty at the Aqueduct Bridge during the Fourth of July fireworks display. The incident occurred when Smith encountered a group of soldiers from Fort Myer who were causing a disturbance on the bridge. Smith requested the soldiers to move on, but a confrontation ensued.
