In the late afternoon of a Friday in Washington, D.C., a burst of violence shattered the autumn quiet. On November 5, 2021, in the 3500 block of Minnesota Avenue, Southeast, 26-year-old Anthony Depetris was shot. The incident occurred at approximately 4:58 p.m., a time when the city was transitioning from the day's work to the evening's repose. First responders rushed to the scene to find Depetris suffering from critical gunshot wounds.
He was swiftly transported to a local hospital, but despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The Metropolitan Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into the death of the Southeast, D.C. resident. Their inquiries into the fatal shooting led to a breakthrough nearly a month later. On December 3, 2021, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, acting on a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant, apprehended a 24-year-old male from Southeast, D.C. He was charged with First Degree Murder while Armed-Felony Murder in connection with Depetris's death.
The investigation did not conclude with this first arrest. Detectives with the Homicide Branch continued to pursue leads in the case. Their persistent efforts resulted in the identification of a second individual believed to be involved in the crime. On Tuesday, January 25, 2022, the Fugitive Unit of the Major Violator Section, also serving a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant, took 25-year-old Omar Williams of Southeast, D.C. into custody. Williams faced the same charge as the first suspect: First Degree Murder While Armed – Felony Murder. The police have stated that the case remains under investigation.
