In the early hours of a Saturday morning in Washington, D.C., a burst of gunfire shattered the peace on Ontario Road, Northwest, leaving a tragic scene in its wake. On August 5, 2023, 34-year-old James Morgan, a resident of Southeast, D.C., was fatally shot in the Adams Morgan neighborhood. The violence that erupted around 1:01 a.m. also claimed the lives of his 30-year-old brother, Jamal Morgan, and another man, 42-year-old Vincent Martin.
When police arrived at the 2500 block of Ontario Road, they discovered the three men suffering from gunshot wounds. James and his brother Jamal were pronounced dead at the scene. Martin was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries two days later.
The investigation into the triple homicide led detectives to identify two suspects. On December 5, 2023, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force located and arrested 37-year-old Renza Bryant of Northwest, D.C., and 34-year-old Jalonte Thompkins of Northeast, D.C., in Fort Washington, Maryland. Both men were subsequently charged with First Degree Murder while Armed. Authorities indicated that there had been some sort of altercation prior to the deadly shooting.
Court documents later revealed a tense interaction between the suspects and victims in the moments leading up to the shooting. It was alleged that after an initial confrontation, the Morgan brothers and Martin walked away. However, Bryant and Thompkins are said to have followed them, opening fire. An autopsy revealed that James Morgan had sustained nine gunshot wounds. During the arrest of the suspects, authorities reported finding multiple firearms. In subsequent court proceedings, Jalonte Thompkins pleaded not guilty to the charges against him, which include three counts of first-degree murder.
