On what was supposed to be an ordinary afternoon, 24-year-old Tyejuan Harkum, a male resident of Northeast, D.C., had plans to get a haircut and then secure a money order to help his mother with rent. Instead, his life was cut tragically short on Wednesday, December 6, 2023. In the 2600 block of Naylor Road SE, at approximately 3:53 p.m., Harkum was fatally shot.
First responders found him suffering from a gunshot wound and transported him to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Harkum's death revealed a chilling sequence of events. Authorities alleged that Harkum was followed from a barbershop to a Roaming Rooster fast-food restaurant by three individuals in a green Kia Soul. After Harkum exited the restaurant, a passenger from the Kia shot him. His mother, Chariece Harkum, grew worried when she hadn't heard from him by the evening and her calls to his phone were answered by a homicide detective.
In connection with the murder, police arrested 26-year-old Robert Straughter of Southeast, D.C., on February 13, 2024. He was charged with second-degree murder while armed, with court documents alleging he was the driver of the stolen vehicle used in the crime. Video footage presented by the prosecution showed Straughter and two other individuals at the barbershop that Harkum visited. The prosecution argued that Straughter and his accomplices had patiently waited to attack their victim.
Initially held without bond, Robert Straughter later accepted a plea deal. He pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. Despite the objections of Tyejuan Harkum's grieving family, who felt the sentence was too lenient, a DC Superior Court judge sentenced Straughter to eight years of incarceration. The prosecution acknowledged that proving Straughter's direct involvement as a shooter would have been difficult at trial, as the evidence against him was largely circumstantial. Harkum's family remembered him as a loving father to his young daughter.
