On a warm Fourth of July evening in 2020, amidst the sounds of fireworks celebrating Independence Day, 11-year-old Davon McNeal’s life was tragically cut short in Washington, D.C. He had been attending an anti-violence cookout organized by his mother in the Anacostia neighborhood. Just as the event was winding down, Davon was struck in the head by a stray bullet when a group of five men began shooting nearby.
The young boy, a promising youth football player who dreamed of a professional career, was on his way to a relative's house to get his ear buds and a phone charger when the gunfire erupted.
The senseless act of violence that claimed Davon's life sent shockwaves through the community. His mother, who worked as a violence interrupter in the city, had dedicated her life to mediating disputes and preventing such tragedies. In a heartbreaking turn of events, her own son became a victim of the very violence she fought against. The sixth-grader had just completed his first year at Kramer Middle School and was known as a genuine kid with aspirations of moving out of the neighborhood.
The investigation into Davon's death led to the arrest of four men: Carlo General, Marcel Gordon, Christen Wingfield, and Daryle Bond. All four men, whom Davon reportedly looked up to and considered family, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter while armed. In June 2022, three of the men were sentenced for their roles in the shooting. Carlo General received a 16-year prison sentence, Marcel Gordon was sentenced to 10 years, and Christen Wingfield received a sentence of 9.5 years. The sentencing for Daryle Bond was scheduled for a later date. Surveillance video presented in court showed one of the men running toward Davon and firing his weapon, with a bullet striking the young boy in the head.
