In the early morning hours of Saturday, September 14, 2024, the life of 44-year-old Erik Mewborn of Northeast, DC, was tragically cut short. At approximately 5:08 a.m., officers from the Metropolitan Police Department responded to a report of a man down in the 2200 block of Adams Place, Northeast. Upon their arrival, they discovered a grim scene: Mewborn was found unconscious, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite the immediate response from DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services,
there were no signs of life, and Mewborn was pronounced dead at the scene. The initial investigation into his death was classified as a homicide, prompting a full inquiry by the Metropolitan Police Department. In an effort to gather information from the public, a reward of up to $25,000 was offered for any tips leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this violent act.
For weeks, the case remained under active investigation. Then, on Friday, November 22, 2024, a breakthrough was made. Members of the Capitol Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, acting on a DC Superior Court arrest warrant, located and apprehended a suspect. Twenty-five-year-old Jeremiah Simms, of Capitol Heights, Maryland, was taken into custody. Simms has since been charged with Second Degree Murder While Armed in connection with the fatal shooting of Erik Mewborn.
