Erick Ferrer, a 67-year-old Army veteran, was fatally shot outside his home in North Miami Beach on January 8, 2023. Ferrer was sitting in his Toyota Camry in the driveway of his residence in the 18000 block of Northeast 21st Court when he was shot in the head. Witnesses reported hearing two or three gunshots, and a white pickup truck was seen reversing out of the driveway after the incident.
Ferrer's wife and her son, who were at home at the time, heard the loud bangs and subsequently found Ferrer slumped over in the driver's seat, bleeding from his head. He was immediately rushed to Aventura Hospital, where he remained in critical condition until he succumbed to his injuries two days later.
The investigation led by local authorities revealed that Ferrer had been working on a kitchen remodel for an elderly couple, and their son, John Vitta, 53, was identified as a suspect. Detectives obtained surveillance footage showing Vitta leaving his home and heading to Ferrer's residence on the day of the shooting. Vitta, who drives a white pickup truck, was arrested on September 12, 2023, and charged with second-degree murder. He was booked into the Miami-Dade jail and held without bond.
The motive behind the killing was not specified in the reports. Ferrer's family and friends expressed their grief and called for justice, describing him as a quiet and great person with whom they had future plans. Vitta's arrest brought some closure to the case, but the exact reasons behind the tragic event remain unclear.
