The crime scene was particularly gruesome, with cash scattered around Zaldua's body, a loaded Glock magazine nearby, and a firearm found inside his jacket pocket.
Investigators also discovered a significant amount of blood at the scene, with a vehicle having driven through it, leaving a clear tire impression. A search of Zaldua's car revealed several large Ziploc bags containing suspected marijuana and a small baggie of suspected cocaine.

Both individuals were charged with first-degree murder with a deadly weapon. At the time of the homicide, Fowler and Fields were attending school in Miami-Dade County, just like Zaldua.
