On February 26, 2023, a violent shooting occurred outside a convenience store in the 400 block of Northwest 27th Avenue in Pompano Beach, Florida. The incident resulted in the deaths of two individuals, including 31-year-old Delana James, who was pregnant with her first child. Delana had been trying to conceive for a while and was described by her family as a loving person.
She was visiting her grandmother, who lived near the convenience store, an area where she and her family had often frequented since childhood.
The shooting involved a car driving by the convenience store and unleashing a barrage of bullets at the crowd. Over 60 rounds were fired during the incident. In addition to Delana James, 35-year-old Dayvon Johnson was also killed. Two other victims, a man and a juvenile, were injured but survived the attack.
The Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) investigated the shooting and later identified 18-year-old Damian Charmant as the suspect. Charmant, who was 17 years old at the time of the shooting, was already in custody on an unrelated charge. He was charged with two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder. Surveillance video captured the incident, showing the panic and smoke from the gunfire as people dashed for cover.
