Joshua Hollingsworth, a 20-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on June 29, 2021, in Charlotte, North Carolina. The incident occurred around 11:45 p.m. on Mayfield Terrace Drive. Hollingsworth, a father of two, was a former student at West Charlotte High School and was remembered as a kind and talented young man, known for his football skills and his role as the comedian of his family.
Following the shooting, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department quickly
identified two suspects: Jamal Harris, a 24-year-old African American male, and Jeremiah Wingo, a 17-year-old African American male. Both were arrested on July 1, 2021. Jamal Harris was charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, while Jeremiah Wingo was charged with accessory after the fact to murder.
However, the legal proceedings took a turn in October 2022 when the charges against Jamal Harris were dropped. Prosecutors were unable to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Harris did not act in self-defense. As a result, the murder charges against him were dismissed. On February 16, 2023, Jeremiah Wingo, who was now 19 years old, pleaded guilty to felony obstruction of justice. In a plea deal, the accessory after the fact to murder charge was dismissed, and Wingo was sentenced to 24 months of probation and 100 hours of community service, with no jail time.
The outcome of the case left Hollingsworth's family devastated and feeling let down by the justice system.
