On May 17, 2023, 16-year-old Adrian Lee McKinzie was fatally shot in Jacksonville, Florida. The incident occurred around 9:40 p.m. in the 3600 block of Effee Street in the Moncrief Park area. Two other individuals—a juvenile and an adult male—sustained life-threatening injuries during the shooting. All three victims were transported to a local hospital, where McKinzie was pronounced dead.
McKinzie was an aspiring rapper known by the stage name "BG Ybezzy."
He had recently released music videos on his YouTube channel, showcasing his passion for music and his ambition to make a name for himself in the industry. Despite his artistic pursuits, McKinzie had previously been a victim of gun violence, having been shot in the leg before turning 14, an injury that required him to relearn how to walk.
Four days after his death, McKinzie's family organized a memorial event on the same block where he was killed. During the gathering, as attendees were releasing balloons in his honor, gunmen opened fire on the crowd, injuring a woman who was shot in the arm. This act of violence at a memorial service underscored the ongoing dangers faced by the community.
In the aftermath, McKinzie's mother, Stephanie Robinson, publicly addressed misconceptions about her son's affiliations. She emphasized that, despite his rap alias, McKinzie was not involved in gang activities. Robinson described her son as a well-mannered, respectful young man who loved music and was a "mama's boy." She clarified that "Bully Gang," part of his music label, referred to his music endeavors and was not indicative of any gang affiliation.
Community organizations, such as MAD DADS, expressed concern over the violence that disrupted McKinzie's memorial. They highlighted the brazenness of the attackers and the potential for further retaliatory violence. MAD DADS stressed the importance of having law enforcement presence at such events to ensure the safety of attendees and prevent further incidents.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with McKinzie's death or the subsequent shooting at his memorial. Authorities continue to investigate both incidents and urge anyone with information to come forward to assist in bringing those responsible to justice.
