On June 5, 2023, a fatal shooting occurred in northeast Miami-Dade, resulting in the death of 21-year-old Henry Pericles. The incident was linked to a botched drug deal involving two suspects, Eymon Manuel Leatherwood, 20, of Miami Gardens, and Gemika Dubuisson, 19, of Miramar.
According to the arrest reports, Dubuisson and Leatherwood had arranged a meeting with Pericles to purchase marijuana.
However, the suspects did not have any money on them and had the intention of robbing Pericles instead. The meeting took place in the 20000 block of Northeast 13th Court, near Pericles' home. During the transaction, Pericles approached Dubuisson's car and engaged in a heated negotiation about the price of the drugs.
Leatherwood noticed that Pericles had a gun in his waistband and, knowing their plan to rob him, Leatherwood pulled out his own gun and shot Pericles before the victim could react. Pericles was shot in the torso, ran off seeking cover behind some vehicles in a driveway, and eventually collapsed on the front porch of a home. He was transported to Aventura Hospital by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue but was pronounced dead at 10:09 p.m.
Following the shooting, police located Dubuisson's car, a silver Chevy Malibu, in Opa-locka on Thursday. The suspects were spotted trying to hide the car by covering it with a tarp and had also painted the rims of the tires black. Dubuisson and Leatherwood were taken into custody and confessed to their involvement in the shooting.
Both suspects are facing charges of first-degree murder/robbery and attempting to tamper with physical evidence. They are currently being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with a bond set at $1.1 million.
