Although deputies responded promptly and searched the vicinity with K-9 units, no immediate suspects or victims were initially located. It wasn’t until the following morning that Mitchell’s body was discovered near the scene. Witness accounts mentioned individuals fleeing the area and a red sedan leaving shortly after the gunfire.
DeShawn was born on September 20, 2004, and is remembered fondly by his family and community. He was preceded in death by his father, Lashawn Mitchell Sr., and a sister, Janiyah Tyson. Survived by his mother, Sheerina Haygood, and several siblings and extended family members, he leaves behind a grieving network of loved ones cherishing his memory. A visitation in his honor is scheduled for March 29, 2024, at Chandler’s Funeral Home in Sarasota.
