On Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024, a tragic incident occurred in the Duclay neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida, resulting in the deaths of three family members, including 12-year-old Israel Grinberg.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office reported that a 22-year-old man, who was Israel's brother, shot and killed his father, 45-year-old Yaniv Grinberg, and Israel before turning the gun on himself.
The incident began with an argument between the 22-year-old son and his father over the use of a racial slur. Following the argument, the son went upstairs, put on tactical gear, and grabbed a rifle. He then shot and killed his father and younger brother.
In addition to the fatalities, the mother was also shot and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Two other children in the house were not harmed during the incident. The mother, who managed to escape the house, was seen covered in blood and calling for help. Neighbors described the scene as chaotic, with the mother's pleas for help and the children's screams still etched in their memories.
The family had a history of disputes, with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office having been called to the home more than a dozen times since 2019, including four calls for domestic incidents or disputes. The family had also mentioned that the 22-year-old son had mental health issues, although the JSO was not aware of any such issues prior to the shooting.
The community is deeply shaken by the event, with neighbors expressing their grief and support for the surviving family members. The incident has left a lasting impact on the tight-knit community, particularly on those who witnessed the aftermath of the tragedy.
