The shooting happened in the morning, just before 7:40 a.m., at the Meadows shopping plaza located at the corner of Southwest 152nd Avenue and Bird Road.
According to the investigation, a woman driving a minivan, Odalys Bancroft, was in line at the ATM when a man in a silver SUV pulled up next to her. The man then opened fire, killing both Bancroft and her son, Theodore Couto, who was in the backseat. After shooting the victims, the gunman turned the gun on himself and fatally shot himself.
The incident was witnessed by several people who immediately alerted a nearby Miami-Dade Police sergeant. Cellphone video captured by witnesses shows the moment of the shooting and the subsequent reaction of the witnesses and police. The police sergeant, who was driving in the area, heard the gunshots and quickly responded to the scene, where he found the woman and child deceased inside the minivan and the man deceased on the passenger side of the van.
Odalys Bancroft was a dedicated and accomplished nurse who had climbed the ranks at Jackson Health System, eventually becoming the director of regulatory affairs. She was remembered by her colleagues and family for her kindness, exceptional talent, and unwavering dedication. Theodore Couto, who would have turned five next month, had just celebrated his pre-K graduation with his family, where he was described as a happy and lively child.
The community and family are deeply devastated by the loss, and a GoFundMe page has been set up to help with funeral expenses. As of the latest reports, the identity of the gunman and the relationship between the gunman and the victims have not been disclosed by the authorities, who continue to investigate the case.
