On December 3, 2023, a fatal shooting occurred in a southwest Miami-Dade home, resulting in the death of 46-year-old Kirsten Williams. The incident began as a family argument between Williams and his wife, which escalated into a violent confrontation.
When the dispute intensified, Williams' 23-year-old son intervened. According to police, both Williams and his son pulled out guns, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
Williams suffered a gunshot wound and was rushed to Jackson South Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The son, who was not injured during the incident, called 911 after the shooting. Police arrived at the scene, located in the 29000 block of SW 162 Avenue, shortly after 9:30 p.m. and found Williams with gunshot wounds. Residents in the area reported hearing approximately 10 gunshots and seeing smoke in the air before the police arrived.
The investigation is ongoing, with homicide detectives interviewing Williams' wife and son at the Miami-Dade Police headquarters. The son has been released pending a review of the case by the State Attorney’s Office, and it remains unclear if any charges will be filed. The police have not released the son’s name, and there is a possibility that the State Attorney’s Office could determine that the son acted in self-defense.
Williams' brother, Karl Whipple, expressed shock and grief over the incident, stating that his brother did not deserve to die and that he could not believe his nephew was involved in the shooting. The community was also shaken by the event, particularly given its proximity to the holiday season.
