On July 8, 2024, at approximately 5:43 p.m., the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) received a 911 call reporting an individual with gunshot wounds near the 5800 block of North Cameron Avenue in Tampa, Florida. Upon arrival, deputies found Juan Rafols, 53, with a gunshot wound to the upper body. Rafols was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The investigation revealed that prior to the shooting, there had been a verbal dispute between Rafols and his brother, Joe Ruiz, 38.
This argument escalated into the fatal shooting.
On July 9, 2024, Joe Ruiz approached the University of South Florida Police Department (USFPD) near Bruce B Downs and 131st Street, expressing his desire to surrender himself for the killing of his brother. HCSO detectives responded and, during an interview, Ruiz confessed to shooting his brother. Ruiz was subsequently arrested without incident for second-degree murder with a firearm and tampering with physical evidence.
The incident has been described as a tragic outcome of a family disagreement, with Sheriff Chad Chronister emphasizing that "violence is never the answer" and that situations should never be allowed to escalate to such a violent extent. The case is now ongoing, with Ruiz facing the consequences of his actions.
Juan Rafols, born on September 16, 1971, was remembered by his family and community for the cherished memories he left behind. A funeral service was held at MacDonald Funeral Home on July 20, 2024, with a visitation preceding the service from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
