Travis Gettis, a 44-year-old man from Jacksonville, Florida, died on November 6, 2024, as a result of a fatal shooting. The incident occurred in the 3200 block of West Edgewood Avenue, where Jacksonville police were called just before midnight in response to a report of a person shot.
The events leading to the shooting began with an argument over a parking spot.
According to investigators, Gettis was at Moncrief Lounge before the shooting, where he got into an argument with a woman about a parking space. The woman threatened to call her sons, as reported by a witness.
Surveillance video captured the sequence of events. Gettis was driving an orange Chevrolet Camaro with orange rims when he crossed the intersection of Edgewood Avenue and New Kings Road. A white vehicle with dark rims was seen driving south at a high rate of speed on New Kings Road. The video then showed Gettis's vehicle pulling into the parking lot of a Burger King restaurant, where he exited the vehicle, holding his chest and asking for help.
Gettis was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead due to a gunshot wound. Police later located a white Dodge Charger, which was seen leaving the shooting location, at a Publix in the 1100 block of Dunn Avenue. Following this, Lavertis Reed, 20, was arrested and charged with murder in connection with the shooting.
Reed's arrest was made shortly after the police located the vehicle associated with the crime scene, marking a swift response by law enforcement to the fatal incident.
