In a multifamily home in Waterbury, Connecticut, on the evening of January 19, 2023, a dispute between two men who knew each other turned fatal. Edward Bosompra, a 35-year-old Black / African American male, was involved in an altercation in a common area of the residence located in the 130 block of Robbins Street. The argument escalated, tragically ending when Bosompra was shot in the torso. Police were called to the scene around 7:20 p.m. for a report of a person being shot.
Upon arrival, they found Bosompra suffering from the gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead shortly after.
The initial investigation by the Waterbury Police Department quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence. Investigators confirmed it was an isolated incident stemming from a personal dispute between Bosompra and another man. The altercation had escalated, leading to the fatal shooting. Authorities worked to identify the individual responsible for Bosompra's death as they processed the scene and spoke with potential witnesses.
The day after the shooting, an arrest was made in connection with the case. Derrick Johnson, a 55-year-old resident of Waterbury, was taken into custody by detectives. Johnson was charged with murder, criminal use of a weapon, illegal transfer of a pistol, carrying a pistol without a permit, criminal possession of a firearm, and risk of injury to a child. He was held on a $2 million bond pending his court arraignment. The police assured the community that the incident was contained and involved individuals who were acquainted with one another.
