Joseph Zavala, an 18-year-old from Waterbury, Connecticut, was fatally shot on November 18, 2023, outside the North End Rec Center. The incident involved multiple gunmen, with police finding a total of 30 shell casings from four different types of guns at the crime scene: 11 from a 0.40-caliber, 11 from a 9 mm, six 0.38-caliber, and two .45-caliber.
