Joseph Zavala, an 18-year-old Hispanic male from Waterbury, Connecticut, was fatally wounded in a shooting on the evening of November 18, 2023. The incident occurred near the intersection of North Main Street and Kingsbury Street. Following the shooting, Zavala was privately transported to the emergency room at Saint Mary's Hospital with a serious gunshot wound.
Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries two days later.
The initial police investigation revealed a complex crime scene outside the North End Rec Center, where a total of 30 shell casings from four different types of firearms were recovered, indicating the involvement of multiple shooters. Investigators determined that the assailants had laid in wait for Zavala. The motive for the shooting is still under investigation, though police have noted that the case involves individuals with ties to local gangs. Zavala himself was suspected of being associated with the "800" street gang.
In the months following the homicide, a thorough investigation led to the arrest of five suspects. The first to be taken into custody was 20-year-old Duane Mercer of Waterbury, who police stated has strong connections to a city gang. He was charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and several firearms offenses. The second suspect, 19-year-old Nigel Robinson, also from Waterbury and a previously convicted felon, was apprehended in December 2023 and faced a murder charge among other violations.
The investigation continued into the next year, leading to three more arrests. In March 2024, a 16-year-old was charged as an adult with murder and related offenses. In August, 20-year-old Jada Ellis of Waterbury was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit murder. The fifth and final suspect, a 17-year-old from Hartford named Naeem Gineyard, was arrested in October 2024 after being stopped by police while driving a stolen vehicle. He faces charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder, with one report indicating he was seen on video "executing" Zavala. With his arrest, police stated they expect no further arrests in the case.
