In the light of a spring afternoon in Hartford, Connecticut, the life of Carl Coolie D. Patterson, a 28-year-old Black man, was brought to an abrupt and violent end on Thursday, March 9, 2023. Known to many as “Coolie,” he was a native of Hartford, a father, and a well-known figure in his community. On that day, in the middle of the afternoon, Patterson was driving his vehicle when he was targeted in a brazen shooting.
The attack took place on Baltimore Street around 2:30 p.m.
While in his car, Patterson was struck by gunfire. In a desperate attempt to flee the scene, he drove away, but his flight was cut short. He crashed his vehicle at the intersection of Albany Avenue and Woodland Street. First responders found him there, unresponsive inside his car which was riddled with bullet holes. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
Hartford police immediately launched a homicide investigation into the shooting. Authorities stated their belief that the shooting was not a random act of violence, but rather that Patterson was the intended target.
