In the late hours of April 17, 2023, in the area of West 14th Avenue and Meade Street in Denver, 18-year-old Richard “Richie” Lovato, a male, was fatally shot. Responding officers found Lovato with a gunshot wound, and he was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. At the time of his death, Lovato was a father to a young son.
Family and friends described Lovato as a cherished young man who was deeply loved.
In the wake of his death, they gathered for a vigil to remember his life. Accounts from his family suggest that on the night of the shooting, Lovato had confronted an individual who was behaving disrespectfully, leading to an altercation that tragically ended with him being shot. His girlfriend was texting with him shortly before the incident and grew worried when his messages abruptly stopped.
The investigation into Lovato's death proceeded, and on June 1, 2023, the Denver Police Department arrested 18-year-old Alonzo Chávez in connection with the homicide. Chávez is being held for investigation of first-degree murder. The arrest brought a sense of progress for a grieving family seeking justice for the loss of a son, father, and beloved friend.
