In the early evening of Saturday, April 29, 2023, tragedy struck in Colorado Springs when 21-year-old Jesse Schiele III, a male resident of the city, was fatally shot. The incident occurred at approximately 7:13 PM in the 1100 block of South Nevada Avenue, where officers were dispatched following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Schiele on the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. Despite immediate attention, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Colorado Springs Police Department's Homicide Unit promptly took charge of the investigation into what was determined to be the city's 6th homicide of 2023. Following an autopsy conducted by the El Paso County Coroner's Office on Monday, May 1, 2023, Schiele's death was officially investigated as a homicide. While the coroner's office is tasked with determining the official cause and manner of death, the nature of his injuries led to the immediate launch of a homicide investigation.
Just days later, the investigation led to a significant development. On Thursday, May 4, 2023, homicide detectives secured an arrest warrant for 19-year-old Bryce Daniels for the charge of Murder in the First Degree in connection with Schiele's death. The following day, on Friday, May 5, 2023, officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department located and arrested Daniels without incident.
