On the evening of June 10, 2023, a 16-year-old male named Izak Jasso was walking home from his new job at the Asian Pacific Market in Colorado Springs. A student at Mitchell High School known for his kindness and ambition, Izak was just steps from his front door on Frost Lane when the night took a tragic turn. He was a beloved son, brother, and friend, who was also a wrestler and a member of the AFJROTC.
As Izak neared his home, he was followed and then confronted by an individual in
what authorities describe as an armed robbery. During the encounter, a struggle ensued, and Izak was shot in the chest. Officers responded to reports of a shooting around 8:30 p.m. and found the young man deceased at the scene. His death, the city's 11th homicide of the year, left his family, including his twin sister, and the wider community in shock and mourning. A memorial of flowers and pictures soon adorned a light pole near where he lost his life.
The Colorado Springs Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation. Their efforts led to the identification of a suspect, and on June 16, 2023, authorities arrested 19-year-old Marshaun Weathington. The investigation revealed that Weathington had followed Izak for nearly a mile before demanding his wallet at gunpoint. Weathington was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and aggravated robbery.
In July 2024, Marshaun Weathington was found guilty of the murder of Izak Jasso and aggravated robbery. During the sentencing, friends, teachers, and family remembered the young man they had lost. Weathington was sentenced to 40 years in the Department of Corrections, to be followed by five years of parole.
