In the early morning hours of January 21, 2022, a grim discovery was made in Colorado Springs. Officers responded to a call for assistance in the 200 block of Nichols Boulevard, where they found the body of a man who had suffered obvious trauma. The man was identified as 42-year-old Brian MacDonald, a resident of Colorado Springs. The nature of his injuries led detectives from the Violent Crimes Section to investigate his death as a homicide.
Following an autopsy, the El Paso County
Coroner's Office worked to determine the official cause and manner of death. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding MacDonald's death was active and ongoing. His passing marked the fifth homicide investigation in the city of Colorado Springs for that year.
Within a week of the discovery, investigators were able to identify a suspect. On January 28, an arrest warrant for first-degree murder was obtained for 21-year-old Demar Ravenell. It was also discovered that Ravenell had an outstanding murder warrant from South Carolina. A multi-agency effort involving the Colorado Springs Police Department's Violent Offender Fugitive Task Force, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office from South Carolina, and the Pueblo Police Department led to Ravenell's arrest at a residence in Pueblo on February 7, 2022. It was not immediately clear what led to the alleged murder or if Ravenell and MacDonald had known each other prior to the incident. Ravenell was subsequently held in the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
