In a quiet trailer park in Greeley, Colorado, the life of 15-year-old Lily Silva-Lopez was tragically cut short on the afternoon of June 16, 2023. What began as a teenage romance spiraled into a devastating act of violence that unfolded in the supposed safety of her own home, just five days before she would have celebrated her sixteenth birthday. The young female, a student at Northridge High School who also worked at a local restaurant, was the victim of a fatal shooting.
The harrowing
events of that day were witnessed in part by Lily's 13-year-old brother. He was watching television in another room when his sister's ex-boyfriend, 16-year-old Jovanni Sirio-Cardona, was seen on a neighbor's camera running down a bike path toward their home. Sirio-Cardona then forced his way into the residence through Lily's bedroom window. Alerted to the intrusion, Lily bravely yelled for her younger brother to run for his life. Moments later, the sound of multiple gunshots echoed through the home. Her brother saw his sister lying on the hallway floor with Sirio-Cardona standing over her, a gun in his hand.
Fearing for his own life, the young boy pleaded with the alleged assailant. Sirio-Cardona reportedly took the boy's phone to prevent him from calling for help before dragging Lily's body back into her bedroom and fleeing the scene. Once the intruder was gone, Lily's brother ran to a neighbor's home to call the police. When authorities arrived, they found Lily deceased with several gunshot wounds.
The relationship between Lily and Jovanni Sirio-Cardona had been fraught with violence, according to her mother. The couple had been dating for about six months when Lily attempted to end the relationship approximately four weeks prior to the shooting. In response to the breakup, Sirio-Cardona allegedly put a gun in her mouth and told her she was not allowed to leave him. Just six days before her death, police had been called to her home after she reported that Sirio-Cardona had punched her in the face and injured her arms. Following the shooting, when police located Sirio-Cardona at his home, he reportedly told his grandmother that he 'did what he had to do and shot someone.'
Jovanni Sirio-Cardona was arrested and has been charged as an adult with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, first-degree burglary, aggravated robbery, and possession of a handgun by a juvenile. His bond was set at $2 million.
