In the summer of 2023, the life of Vincent Lee Smith, a 56-year-old man, was tragically cut short in his lifelong hometown of Pueblo, Colorado. On July 24th, in the 2000 block of E. Evans Ave, events unfolded that would lead to his untimely death, later ruled a homicide. The community was left to mourn a man described as a proud father of four and a doting grandfather to ten.
A graduate of Central High School's class of 1986, he was remembered for his love of Taekwondo, video games, and cooking for his family and community. His willingness to help anyone in need was a hallmark of his character.
The Pueblo Police Department launched an investigation into the fatal shooting. Their efforts led them to a suspect, 52-year-old Russel Martinez. On August 10, 2023, detectives secured a warrant for Martinez's arrest on a charge of manslaughter. He was taken into custody without incident and subsequently booked into the Pueblo County Jail. The arrest brought a measure of progress in a case that had shaken those who knew and loved Vincent Smith.
As the legal process began to move forward, friends and family gathered to remember a man who was an integral part of their lives. His passions, which included listening to oldies and gospel music, playing pool, and engaging in a game of chess, painted a picture of a man with a zest for life. The unexpected loss left a void in his family, which included his four children, ten grandchildren, a sister, and a brother, along with numerous other relatives and friends who will carry his memory forward.
