Danzel D. Atkins, a 31-year-old male, was looking forward to a break when he traveled to Denver for a vacation. On the evening of August 16, 2023, he posted on Facebook about how good it felt to finally be on vacation. Tragically, only five hours later, his life was cut short. In the early morning hours of August 17, at approximately 1:10 a.m., Denver Police responded to a shooting in the 2200 block of Welton Street. Upon arrival, officers found Danzel Atkins suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
An investigation into the shooting revealed that the incident began as an altercation outside of a bar. During the scuffle, a male suspect allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot Atkins once in the chest. Atkins was a U.S. Army veteran and the father of four children who ran his own small electrician business in Houston.
Following an investigation, the Denver Police Department identified a suspect in the fatal shooting. On August 29, 2023, law enforcement arrested 28-year-old Quadre Lamb in connection with the homicide. Lamb is being held for investigation of first-degree murder. The Denver District Attorney's Office will make the final determination on charges.
