On the night of July 31, 2022, 31-year-old Kevin Piaskowski was tragically killed in what authorities described as a senseless and unprovoked road rage incident on Interstate 70 in Denver, Colorado. A White / Caucasian male, Piaskowski was driving his car when he was shot by the driver of a stolen silver Dodge Ram. The incident, which occurred near the Northfield/Quebec exit, was captured on a witness's dashcam, showing the truck driving aggressively and swerving through traffic before the driver opened fire.
Following the shooting, the Dodge Ram crashed into a semi-truck and another vehicle. The driver of the stolen truck then fled the scene on foot. Piaskowski was found in his vehicle about a quarter-mile from the crash and was transported to a hospital, where he died from a gunshot wound. The investigation revealed that Piaskowski and the shooter did not know each other.
The investigation led Denver police to a 17-year-old suspect, Jameel James, who was arrested on August 11, 2022. Investigators used evidence from a cellphone found in another stolen vehicle involved in the multi-vehicle crash, a white Hyundai Santa Fe, to identify James as the driver of the Dodge Ram. The occupants of the Hyundai had also fled the scene after the crash.
Prosecutors decided to charge James as an adult, and he was initially charged with first-degree murder, motor vehicle theft, and possession of a firearm by a juvenile. In September 2023, James pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree murder as part of a plea agreement. On March 19, 2024, Jameel James was sentenced to 22 years in prison for the murder of Kevin Piaskowski. Denver's District Attorney described the crime as a 'senseless and completely unprovoked murder on one of Denver's major highways.'
