In the early morning hours of August 23, 2023, a confrontation over stolen scooters in Aurora, Colorado, tragically ended the life of 49-year-old Miguel Angel Saucedo Araujo. A hardworking and humble man, Saucedo Araujo was awakened around 4:30 a.m. by the sound of two individuals stealing scooters from the backyard of his residence on Paris Street.
Along with his son, he went outside to confront the thieves, who then fled on the stolen scooters.
Saucedo Araujo and his son decided to pursue the culprits in their pickup truck. During the chase, their vehicle was fired upon, though neither was injured at that time. After the pursuit, they returned to their home. Shortly after, a vehicle drove by their house, and multiple shots were fired into the residence. One of these bullets struck Miguel Angel Saucedo Araujo, inflicting a fatal wound.
The Aurora Police Department launched an intensive investigation that led to the arrest of four teenage suspects. The first, a 16-year-old male, was taken into custody on September 2, 2023, and faced charges of first-degree murder and aggravated robbery. In October, two more arrests were made: 18-year-old Ahmed Mohamed and a 15-year-old boy. Mohamed, who was 17 at the time of the shooting, was charged as an adult with first and second-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated robbery, and illegal discharge of a firearm. The 15-year-old faced similar charges in juvenile court. The fourth and final suspect, a 17-year-old male, was arrested in December and also charged with first-degree murder and aggravated robbery.
In a subsequent legal proceeding, Ahmed Mohamed pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. He was sentenced to seven years in a youthful offender system. As part of his sentence, he also received a 21-year suspended prison sentence, which he will not have to serve if he successfully completes the youthful offender program. The cases against the other three younger suspects were handled in juvenile court.
