In the early morning hours of September 21, 2023, a dispute in Denver's City Park West neighborhood turned deadly, claiming the life of 42-year-old Kenneth Ray Watkins Jr. Watkins, a Black/African American male, was in the 1100 block of East 16th Avenue when an altercation occurred involving himself, a woman, and another man later identified as Jeremiah Brown. The confrontation escalated, resulting in gunfire.
Around 1:45 a.m., Denver police officers responded to reports of the shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered two individuals with gunshot wounds. Both Watkins and the other victim were immediately transported to a local hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Watkins succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
In the days following the shooting, an investigation led by the Denver Police Department identified Jeremiah Brown as the suspect. He was subsequently arrested and taken into custody. The investigation determined that the shooting stemmed from the earlier altercation between Brown, Watkins, and the woman.
Jeremiah Brown was formally charged with second-degree murder and six other offenses related to the incident. In November 2023, Brown entered into a plea agreement and pleaded guilty to the charge of second-degree murder. As a result of his guilty plea, the other six charges were dismissed. On January 17, 2025, a judge sentenced Brown to 38 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections for his role in the death of Kenneth Ray Watkins Jr.
