In the early morning hours of March 29, 2024, a violent encounter in Denver's Ruby Hill neighborhood tragically ended the life of 35-year-old Luis Gomez Reyes, a Hispanic/Latino male. The incident unfolded just before 7 a.m. in the 1600 block of South Federal Boulevard. When police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Gomez Reyes suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead at the location.
The Denver Medical Examiner's Office later officially ruled his death a homicide.
The initial investigation into the fatal shooting yielded few immediate leads for the Denver Police Department, and for a time, no suspects were publicly identified. Investigators appealed to the public for any information that could help solve the case, offering a potential reward for tips that would lead to an arrest. A significant breakthrough in the case came on April 17, 2024, nearly three weeks after the shooting. Law enforcement in Oro Valley, Arizona, conducted a traffic stop that led to the apprehension of the primary suspect. The driver, identified as 51-year-old Francisco Ivan Romero, was discovered to have an outstanding warrant for first-degree murder in connection with the death of Luis Gomez Reyes. Romero was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Pima County Jail, awaiting extradition to Denver. While an arrest has been made, the details of how investigators identified Romero as the suspect remain confidential, as the arrest affidavit has been sealed from public view. The Denver District Attorney's office will ultimately determine the final charges against him.
