In the late morning of September 25, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the Saturday calm in the parking lot of a Walgreens in Broomfield, Colorado. When the violence subsided, 19-year-old Javier Garcia Jr. was dead, and two of his companions, an 18-year-old woman and a juvenile male, were wounded. The incident, which unfolded around 11:30 a.m. near Midway Boulevard and Zuni Street, was not a random act of violence; the individuals involved were known to each other.
According to police,
Javier Garcia Jr. and the alleged shooter, 19-year-old Trevor Woodruff, had arranged to meet in the parking lot for what was described as 'a buy.' Woodruff entered Garcia's vehicle, where the woman and the juvenile were also present. The woman later told investigators that the two young men were having a 'guy conversation' while she was on her phone. At some point, for reasons that remain unclear, Woodruff allegedly began shooting. As the woman tried to escape the car, she was also shot.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Woodruff fled the scene. However, it wasn't long before he turned himself in to the authorities. A family member of Woodruff contacted the police, and shortly thereafter, Woodruff himself called and was persuaded to surrender. Upon his arrest, he claimed that he had acted in self-defense, stating that he feared for his life during the encounter. Friends of Woodruff later informed police that he was known to be involved in the buying and selling of guns.
Trevor Woodruff was taken into custody and subsequently faced a host of serious charges, including first-degree murder for the death of Javier Garcia Jr., two counts of attempted first-degree murder for the injuries sustained by the other two victims, and two counts of first-degree assault. The 18-year-old woman was reported to be in stable condition following the shooting, while the juvenile male was listed in critical condition. The investigation into the shooting continued as the legal process against Woodruff began, leaving the family and friends of Javier Garcia Jr. to mourn the sudden and violent loss of the young man.
