On a late summer afternoon in Denver, Colorado, a dispute on the road escalated into a fatal encounter for 35-year-old Fernando Alvarez-Chacon. The incident, which took place on Thursday, August 29, 2024, began as a road rage altercation. Alvarez-Chacon, driving a Ford F-250, was attempting to exit Interstate 25 onto Santa Fe Drive when his path was reportedly blocked by a box truck.
An argument ensued between the two drivers.
The verbal exchange quickly intensified, leading to a physical confrontation. Witnesses reported that Alvarez-Chacon exited his truck and threw punches at the driver of the box truck. Following this, Alvarez-Chacon returned to his vehicle and drove away, heading north on South Santa Fe Drive. Moments later, a white Chevy Malibu with temporary tags pulled up alongside his truck. A shot was fired from the Malibu, striking Alvarez-Chacon.
Despite being wounded, Alvarez-Chacon continued to drive, turning onto West Byers Place. The passenger in his truck recounted that he began to lose consciousness. The Malibu then allegedly pulled in front of their truck on South Kalamath Street, and three more shots were fired. Alvarez-Chacon's truck rolled to a stop in a grassy area overlooking the interstate. He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting led Denver police to arrest 21-year-old Chyon Kendrick in connection with the homicide. Kendrick was taken into custody on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, and faces a possible first-degree murder charge. He is being held without bond.
