In the late hours of April 18, 2024, the life of 55-year-old Jason Bales, a male resident of Colorado Springs, was tragically cut short. Just before midnight, officers from the Colorado Springs Police Department responded to a call of shots fired in the 4200 block of Sinton Road. Upon their arrival, they discovered Bales with life-threatening injuries.
He was rushed to a local hospital, but ultimately succumbed to his wounds.
The El Paso County Coroner's Office later identified the victim as Jason Bales. While the official cause and manner of death were pending the coroner's determination, the circumstances immediately pointed towards a homicide investigation. The incident marked the 13th homicide in the city of Colorado Springs for the year, a significant increase compared to the six homicides recorded by the same time in the previous year.
In the days following the shooting, detectives worked to piece together the events that led to Bales' death and to identify a suspect. Their investigation led them to 29-year-old Michael Thomas Darby, also of Colorado Springs. On April 23, 2024, an arrest warrant was issued for Darby on the charge of first-degree murder for his alleged involvement in Bales' death. He was subsequently taken into custody and booked into the El Paso County jail.
Darby appeared in court virtually from the jail, where he was formally advised of the first-degree murder charge against him. His bond was set at one million dollars. It was revealed that Darby has a lengthy and violent criminal history, with twelve cases dating back to 2017. His prior charges include assault on a peace officer, robbery, menacing with a deadly weapon, and possession of a weapon by a previous offender, among other offenses.
