In the early hours of a summer morning at Lake Pueblo State Park, a dispute turned deadly, leaving two men from Pueblo fatally shot. The incident, which unfolded just after midnight on June 21, 2024, near Sailboard Beach, claimed the life of 20-year-old Trevion Lucas. Another Pueblo resident, 29-year-old Dustyn Courtney, also died in the shooting. The two men were near the dam on the north side of the lake where a group had been fishing from the shore.
According to the Colorado Bureau of
Investigation, the lead agency on the case, the violence erupted from an argument and subsequent physical altercation between Courtney and an unidentified male suspect. The confrontation escalated when the suspect drew a handgun and shot Courtney. While the circumstances leading to the initial conflict remain unclear, investigators have stated that it does not appear Trevion Lucas was involved in the original dispute. The motive for why Lucas was also fatally shot remains under investigation.
Immediately following the shootings, the suspect fled the park and has since remained at large. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation, with assistance from Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office, is continuing to seek information from witnesses in an effort to identify the person responsible for the deaths of Lucas and Courtney. No arrests have been made in connection with the double homicide. Autopsies for both victims were scheduled to be performed in Pueblo County. Following a temporary closure for the investigation, Sailboard Beach was reopened to the public.
