In the autumn of 2023, the life of a Little Rock teenager was tragically cut short in a burst of violence that unfolded at a busy intersection. Semaj O'Neal, a 16-year-old Black male, was found inside a vehicle on the afternoon of October 27th, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. The scene, near the crossroads of Baseline and Chicot roads, was chaotic, with three wrecked vehicles hinting at the altercation that had just transpired. First responders rushed the critically injured young man to a nearby hospital, where he would fight for his life for five days. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his severe injuries on November 1, 2023.
The shooting was not an isolated incident of violence that day. A 9-year-old was also found at the scene with a gunshot wound to the leg and was transported to the hospital for treatment. Shortly after, a 17-year-old male and a 19-year-old woman arrived at a local hospital in private vehicles with non-life-threatening injuries sustained during the same event. The incident was described by authorities as a roadway shootout, a violent exchange that had multiple victims and ended a young life.
In the wake of Semaj O'Neal's death, the Little Rock Police Department launched a homicide investigation. Their efforts soon led them to identify a suspect in the fatal shooting.
