On a late spring evening in Fayetteville, Arkansas, the life of 48-year-old Weston Wade Miller, a White male, was cut short. On May 26, 2024, deputies from the Washington County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call that led them to a grim discovery on Oakland Zion Road, just outside the city limits. There, inside a car, they found Miller, a resident of nearby Springdale, deceased from what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his head.
The emergency call was made by a woman who reported
that her friend, 69-year-old Hugh Kane of Fayetteville, had shot Miller. According to her account to the police, Kane claimed that Miller had been threatening him and that he 'came at him' before the shooting occurred. When law enforcement arrived, they detained Kane at the scene. He was later taken to a local hospital after complaining of chest pains.
During an interview with investigators, Kane admitted to shooting Miller, reiterating that he felt threatened by an imminent physical attack from the younger man. The investigation also revealed that Kane had a previous felony conviction, which legally prohibited him from possessing a firearm.
Following the investigation, Hugh Kane was arrested and booked into the Washington County Detention Center on May 27, 2024. He faces charges of capital murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Miller’s body was sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab to officially determine the cause of death. Kane has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and is being held on a $750,000 bond. His trial is scheduled to take place on December 9, 2024.
