On the evening of July 2, 1881, Deputy Sheriff John Isham Mount, aged 37, was tragically killed in Fayetteville, Arkansas. While conversing with City Marshal William D. Patton on the town square around 9:00 PM, both men were ambushed by assailants hiding in the shadows of nearby buildings. Deputy Mount sustained two gunshot wounds, and Marshal Patton was shot three times; both died almost instantly.
