On September 20, 2024, a dispute over stolen property in Royal, Arkansas, tragically ended the life of 45-year-old Jonathan Owen Huff. That day, Huff, a White male from Jessieville, went with his wife and a friend named Gonzales to a residence on Reveille Terrace to retrieve some items they believed had been stolen.
Upon their arrival, an argument erupted. Huff and Gonzales exited their truck and began yelling at someone at the home.
The situation quickly escalated when Gonzales reportedly retrieved a pistol and began firing. According to Huff's wife, who took cover in the truck, she heard shots and saw Gonzales shooting. She also heard additional gunshots coming from farther away. Amid the chaos, she witnessed Gonzales switch from the pistol to a rifle and then heard him exclaim that Huff had been shot.
When the gunfire ceased, Huff's wife found him lying deceased in the yard with an apparent gunshot wound and called 911. By the time deputies from the Garland County Sheriff's Office arrived, several individuals had already fled the scene. Investigators found a brown 9mm pistol underneath Huff's body and recovered. 223-caliber rounds from the area.
With the assistance of the Arkansas State Police, authorities were able to locate the individuals who had left the scene. On September 30, 2024, ten days after the fatal shooting, investigators arrested Gonzales on multiple felony warrants connected to the incident. During questioning, Gonzales provided law enforcement with his account of the events that transpired. The investigation into the death of Jonathan Huff remains ongoing.
