On a tragic Friday evening in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, the life of Gerele Jones, a 50-year-old Caucasian male, was cut short in an act of violence. On February 24, 2023, deputies from the Woodbury County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a residence following a shots-fired call. The events that unfolded painted a grim picture of a domestic dispute turned deadly.
Inside the home, law enforcement discovered a horrific scene.
Gerele Jones and a 40-year-old woman, Ashley Rogers, were found with life-threatening gunshot wounds. Jones tragically succumbed to his injuries. The suspected shooter, 43-year-old Raymond Rogers, the estranged husband of Ashley Rogers, was also found at the scene with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The investigation suggests that Raymond Rogers broke into the residence where his estranged wife was living with Gerele Jones. He then allegedly shot both individuals before turning the gun on himself. In a heroic act, a 12-year-old boy, identified as Gerele Jones's son, managed to call for help while the attack was in progress. His courage was instrumental in the swift response of law enforcement.
Raymond Rogers survived his self-inflicted injuries and was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, burglary, and stalking. He entered a plea of not guilty in June of 2023. However, legal proceedings have been delayed as a psychological evaluation has since deemed him mentally incompetent to stand trial. He remains in custody on a two-million-dollar bond.
