Jonathan Michael Hoffman, a 39-year-old man, was killed on July 21, 2020, after a trip through rural Madison County ended in gunfire. Although some early records and databases shortened his surname to Hoff, news reports, charging documents, and court records identified him as Hoffman and described him as a Des Moines resident. His body was discovered near Monroe at the intersection of Macksburg Road and Grandview Lane, where a passing delivery driver saw him lying facedown in the roadway during
the afternoon. Deputies arrived and found that he had been shot multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators determined that Hoffman had not simply been attacked by an unknown assailant along the roadside. Earlier that day, he had reportedly been riding in a vehicle with Gerald Steven Parker and another person. The group was said to be driving Hoffman toward Creston when he began complaining that he wanted to take control of the vehicle. According to the evidence later presented in the case, the vehicle stopped so Hoffman could get out and move into the driver’s seat. Instead, Parker shot him and left his body near the rural intersection. Prosecutors maintained that the killing was deliberate and premeditated and that it occurred during a robbery.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office worked with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation as authorities reconstructed Hoffman’s final movements. Investigators initially asked anyone who had traveled through the area between the afternoon hours surrounding the discovery to report anything unusual they had seen. Less than two weeks after the killing, authorities arrested Parker, then a Creston resident in his early forties. He was charged with first-degree murder and held in the Madison County Jail while the case moved toward trial.
Parker’s jury trial was conducted in February 2021 at the Jackson Building on the Madison County Fairgrounds, a location selected to provide additional space during the COVID-19 pandemic. Prosecutors accused him of willfully, deliberately, and with malice aforethought killing Hoffman on Macksburg Road. The jury found Parker guilty of both first-degree murder and first-degree robbery on February 9, 2021. His prison sentence began on March 3, 2021, and he was serving a life sentence at the Iowa State Penitentiary.
Parker appealed his convictions, arguing that the prosecution had failed to present sufficient independent evidence corroborating testimony from a witness he characterized as an accomplice. He also claimed that the trial court should have granted him a new trial because the verdict was contrary to the weight of the evidence. On June 15, 2022, the Iowa Court of Appeals rejected those arguments and affirmed his convictions for first-degree murder and first-degree robbery, concluding that the challenged testimony was adequately supported and that the trial court had not abused its discretion.
The prosecution therefore ended with an arrest, trial, two felony convictions, and an unsuccessful appeal rather than remaining an unresolved roadside homicide. Parker continued serving his sentence until May 4, 2026, when he died at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison. His death brought his incarceration to an end, but the murder conviction in Hoffman’s killing remained intact.
