In the early summer of 2023, the life of 23-year-old Kenyauta Vesey-Keith, a Black / African American male, was tragically cut short. On the night of June 11, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Vesey-Keith was fatally shot. Born on March 8, 2000, in Rock Island, Illinois, he was a father of six and was known by the nickname "Bubba". He had a passion for working on cars and had recently enjoyed the opportunity to work alongside his father as a mechanic.
He was the second of nine children and took pride in being a loving father and a big brother.
The shooting that claimed Kenyauta Vesey-Keith's life occurred in the 1300 block of First Avenue Southeast, near Coe College. Responding to the incident around midnight, Cedar Rapids police found Vesey-Keith with gunshot wounds. He was transported to St. Luke's Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The investigation into his death quickly focused on identifying a suspect responsible for the violent act that ended the young man's life.
Following the shooting, investigators identified 23-year-old Denzel Wilson as the primary suspect. A warrant was issued for his arrest on charges of first-degree murder and weapons-related offenses. After a nearly two-month search, U.S. Marshals apprehended Wilson in Gary, Indiana, on August 8, 2023. He was then extradited back to Iowa to face the charges against him.
Denzel Wilson's trial took place in February 2025 and lasted four days. The jury deliberated for only four hours before returning a guilty verdict for first-degree murder. During the sentencing, Vesey-Keith's mother and sister delivered emotional victim impact statements, expressing the profound pain and loss their family has endured. On April 19, 2025, a judge sentenced Denzel Wilson to life in prison without the possibility of parole. In addition to the life sentence, Wilson was ordered to pay $150,000 in restitution to Vesey-Keith's family.
