In the summer of 2023, the life of a 41-year-old White/Caucasian male, Jeremy Smith, was cut short in a fatal shooting in Muscatine, Iowa. The incident unfolded around 12:37 p.m. on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at the Harrison Lofts apartment building located at 1716 Bandag Drive.
Responding to a 911 call, Muscatine police officers discovered Smith deceased in apartment 305 from a gunshot wound.
Eyewitnesses at the scene were quick to provide information that helped law enforcement identify a suspect, leading to an extensive search of the city's northeast side. Several local, county, and state agencies, including the Iowa State Patrol and the Muscatine County Sheriff's Office, collaborated in the search, utilizing drones and canines to track the suspect. Some businesses, a park, and a learning center in the vicinity were placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure during the search.
The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Andre Brunnett Jones, was located at a residence at 1414 First Avenue, approximately half a mile from the crime scene. A perimeter was established around the house, and at approximately 2:18 p.m., Jones surrendered to the Muscatine Police Department without further incident.
Following his arrest, Andre Jones was charged with second-degree murder, a Class B felony. He was also charged with being a person ineligible to carry a dangerous weapon, a serious misdemeanor. Jones was subsequently booked into the Muscatine County Jail and held without bond. Authorities have indicated that Smith and Jones were acquainted, but a motive for the shooting has not been publicly released. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
