Mark Ashton McFarland, a 16-year-old male from Muscatine, Iowa, was one of six members of the McFarland family killed on Monday, June 1, 2026, in a mass shooting that police described as domestic-related. Mark was born in Iowa on August 1, 2009, the son of Ryan and Lesa Purinton McFarland. He attended Muscatine High School, worked at Pizza Ranch, and was remembered as someone who loved mechanics, motorcycles, cars, video games, tennis, music, weightlifting, and the Fast and Furious movies.
The violence began around 12:12 p.m. when authorities received a report of a shooting at a home on Park Avenue in Muscatine. Officers and emergency medical personnel arrived and found four people inside the residence suffering from gunshot wounds. All four were pronounced dead at the scene. As investigators worked through the first crime scene, they learned there may be more victims elsewhere in the city. Two additional men were later found dead from apparent gunshot wounds at separate locations, one at another home and one at a business.
Police identified the suspected shooter as 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland, Mark’s father. Authorities said Ryan McFarland had left the Park Avenue residence before officers arrived. A short time later, law enforcement found him on the Riverfront Trail near the pedestrian bridge. As officers confronted him and attempted to speak with him, he shot himself. Officers and EMS personnel tried to save him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victims publicly identified in the Muscatine killings were Lesa McFarland, 51; Dakota Whitlow, 32; Austin Harris, 29; Ryle McFarland, 20; Mark McFarland, 16; and Ryan Scott McFarland Jr., 13. They were all described by police and reporting as relatives of the suspected shooter. Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Ryan and Lesa McFarland, and his siblings Ryle McFarland, Ryan Scott McFarland, Dakota Whitlow, and Austin Harris. His surviving brother, Johnathan McFarland, later spoke at a community vigil, where the names of the victims were read aloud and the scale of the loss became public.
No arrests were made because the suspected gunman died by suicide after police located him. Authorities continued to investigate the shootings as a multi-scene homicide case, but the available reports identified Ryan Willis McFarland as the lone suspect. Police said preliminary findings pointed to a domestic-related dispute as the motive, though they did not publicly release a detailed explanation of what led to the killings.
Reports also noted that Ryan McFarland had a prior criminal history. News accounts described past cases that included child endangerment connected to the death of an infant at a daycare he and Lesa operated, as well as earlier felony convictions and later fraud-related charges. Those earlier cases did not result in any trial or conviction connected to Mark’s death, but they became part of the public reporting as authorities and the Muscatine community tried to understand how a family tragedy of this scale unfolded.
Mark’s death was part of a devastating loss that reached far beyond one home. The Muscatine Community School District said students and school employees were among the victims, and counseling resources were made available as the community mourned. A support fund was later established for the McFarland, Whitlow, and Harris families to help with memorial-related and ongoing needs. Mark’s funeral service was scheduled with the rest of the McFarland family, as friends, relatives, classmates, and neighbors were left grieving a teenager whose life was cut short in an act of family violence.
