In the late spring of 2026, a horrific sequence of events shattered the community of Muscatine, Iowa, leaving multiple generations of a single family dead. On Monday, June 1, 2026, Austin Harris, a 29-year-old man, was killed in a widespread shooting rampage carried out by 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland. The day's violence began to unfold around midday when police were called to a home in the 200 block of Park Avenue following reports of a shooting.
Upon arrival, they discovered a grim scene: four individuals had been fatally shot. The deceased at this location were identified as 51-year-old Lesa McFarland, and three of her children: 20-year-old Ryle McFarland, 16-year-old Mark McFarland, and 13-year-old Ryan McFarland Jr.
The investigation quickly broadened as law enforcement learned of other potential victims. Austin Harris was discovered deceased at his residence on the 1500 block of Mill Street. Another victim, 32-year-old Dakota Whitlow, Lesa's son, was found dead at his workplace, a business located on the 800 block of Grandview Avenue. All six victims, including Harris, were related. The identified suspect in all the killings was Ryan Willis McFarland, who was Lesa's husband and the father of Ryle, Mark, and Ryan Jr. After the initial discoveries, officers located McFarland on the riverfront trail near a pedestrian bridge. The motive for the mass murder was believed to be a domestic dispute. Subsequent investigations into Ryan McFarland's background revealed a significant criminal history. In 1994, he was convicted of armed robbery and burglary in Illinois and sentenced to seven years in prison. Later, in 2011, while operating as a childcare provider in Iowa, he faced charges of child endangerment resulting in death. He ultimately pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of child endangerment with no injury and received a one-year prison sentence and probation. This prior case involved the death of a child in his care, and it was reported that he had not disclosed his previous felony conviction on his childcare license application. Given that the sole suspect killed himself, there were no arrests or trials. The case concluded as a murder-suicide, leaving a community to mourn the devastating loss of an entire family, including Austin Harris, a man remembered by relatives as a kind and loving soul who had worked for eight years at Musco Lighting.
